When I was a child I liked ice creams a lot.
-Ahora veremos el pasado continuo, que utilizamos para describir una acción laaaaaaaarga que estábamos haciendo en el pasado, sin especificar si la hemos terminado o no. Esta acción laaaaaaarga suele estar interrumpida por una más corta que es la que va en pasado simple.
Yesterday morning I was having a shower when the telephone rang!
The children were doing their homework when I got home.
*Compare: The children did their homework when (= after) I got home.
-Las dos acciones tienen lugar en el pasado, son simultáneas/ocurren a la vez, pero la acción corta empezó y terminó en un momento del pasado → pasado simple.
Y la acción que estaba ocurriendo cuando la otra tuvo lugar → pasado continuo.
-Lo utilizaremos para empezar a contar una historia.
Last Monday I was waiting for a taxi when ...
-Y con verbos que muestran cambio.
The boys were growing up/changing so quickly!
**Remember: con los "stative verbs" solo usaremos el pasado simple.
→ Correct: When I got home I smelt your wonderful spaghetti sauce.
→ Incorrect: When I got home I was smelling your wonderful spaghetti sauce.
-FORMA:
Igual que en castellano se dice él estaba durmiendo (pasado del verbo ser-estar + gerundio),
en inglés diremos he was sleeping (pasado del verbo to be + gerundio).
